<h3>Through over a decade of leadership roles in the community, Sarah has built relationships with local and state representatives, nonprofit organizations, and throughout the community. She's committed to using that network to work for you.</h3><h4>Sarah's Aspinwall Story</h4>One drive through the tree-lined and stroller-filled streets of Aspinwall in 2006 was all it took to convince Sarah, then pregnant with her first child, that this was where she wanted to live and raise a family. Coffee shops, restaurants, and shops within walking distance, as well as access to public transportation, sealed the deal. Sarah rented an apartment on Western Avenue for several years before purchasing her home on Center Avenue, where she lives now with her two teenagers, her "forever puppy" Maisey, and her talkative but shy Siamese cat, Candace.<h4>Sarah's Service to the Aspinwall Community</h4>Sarah began volunteering in the Aspinwall community early on, participating in Annual Green Streets cleanups and helping to clear out debris and overgrowth at Allegheny RiverTrail Park before it opened to the public.&nbsp;In 2016, Sarah began helping with the planning and communications for Aspinwall's Big Night Out. The following year, she joined the board of Aspinwall Neighbors and became president in 2022, working to make this<a href="https://triblive.com/local/valley-news-dispatch/as-head-of-aspinwall-neighbors-sarah-shaffer-works-to-make-great-place-to-live-even-better/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> already great place to live even better</a>.Through Aspinwall Neighbors, Sarah has led several projects that benefit the Aspinwall community, including launching the<a href="https://aspinwallneighbors.org/snow/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> Snow Angels</a> program, expanding the<a href="https://aspinwallneighbors.org/soup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> Soup Delivery</a> program through partnerships with local restaurants, securing state and local grant funding for the <a href="https://aspinwallneighbors.org/art/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">"Love, Aspinwall" community mural</a>, championing the redevelopment of the Alley A Rain Garden, and ensuring Aspinwall’s Big Night Out is free for all to attend. Most recently, she led the launch of the<a href="https://aspinwallneighbors.org/community-grant-program/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> Aspinwall Community Grants</a> program, which helps bring community-led ideas to life.Sarah is committed to building a welcoming and inclusive Aspinwall community. Meet Allegheny County Council candidate Lissa Geiger Shulman in Aspinwall. Sarah will be a special guest.

In 2023, Aspinwall Borough created and adopted an <a href="https://www.aspinwallplan.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" style="color: var(--color-text)">Implementable Comprehensive Plan</a>, establishing a vision, goals, and objectives for local government in the long term. Many aspects of the plan will benefit from collaboration and continual community engagement. Building on the work already in progress, Sarah will support the implementation of projects like the Alley A Activation and the realignment of the Brilliant Avenue connection to Aspinwall RiverTrail Park, goals that nonprofit community organizations, business owners, and community members share.

It's unrealistic for every resident to attend every council meeting, and meeting agendas and minutes don't always provide enough details for citizens to be fully informed. Although it's a step in the right direction that council meeting recordings are now available to the public, Sarah wants to do more to engage the community.&nbsp; We need to meet people where they are and provide multiple avenues for community members to be heard.

It's unrealistic for every resident to attend every council meeting, and meeting agendas and minutes don't always provide enough details for residents to be fully informed. Although it's a step in the right direction that council meeting recordings are now available to the public, Sarah wants to do more to engage the community.&nbsp;

As a non-profit community leader, Sarah believes collaboration is essential. She's seen first-hand how valuable collaboration between the local government and community organizations can be.
